Hey there! I am Kalie McKinley, owner and instructor of Where Ocean Meets Mountain Adventures, (WOMMA)and a public-school high school physical education teacher. WOMMA was created to offer opportunities to explore and connect with nature through various outdoor activities. Think of it as your favorite physical education class mixed in with the shenanigans of summer camp. I also want to do my active part in making the outdoors more inclusive and removing barriers that keep people from moving in the great outdoors.
After my first year of teaching, I took a summer-long girls’ trip to Oahu, Hawaii, where I discovered a variety of outdoor activities that made me feel more alive than ever before. For the first time, I moved just for the joy of it, free from the pressure of competition. It was a refreshing shift—no longer focused on being better than others but simply enjoying the movement. Backpacking and stand-up paddleboarding quickly became my new passions, offering beautiful ways to connect with nature. I began incorporating these activities into my physical education curriculum. I also took students on field trips to experience nature firsthand. Their feedback was incredibly positive, with students expressing how they felt and gratitude for the experience of moving in nature. That experience sparked a deeper desire within me to go beyond the classroom and help others build a positive relationship with movement.
